Windows 11 could soon warn you if someone’s snooping on your screen

Ever had that uneasy feeling when you’re working on a train or in a coffee shop… like someone’s peeking at your screen?

It’s more than just awkward. If you’re dealing with sensitive emails, client data, or confidential documents, shoulder-surfing can be a genuine security risk.

Microsoft looks set to tackle this problem head-on with a new Windows 11 feature called Onlooker Detection.

As the name suggests, it’s designed to spot when someone else is glancing at your screen — and alert you.

How does it work?

Onlooker Detection builds on Windows’ existing Presence Sensing technology. That’s the feature that dims or locks your screen when you step away and wakes it back up when you return (via Windows Hello).

The new upgrade takes it further:

  • If someone nearby is detected, your laptop can dim the screen to make it harder to read

  • Or it can send you a warning — so you know you’re not alone

  • Or both, depending on your settings

The idea is simple: automatic privacy protection, without you needing to do a thing.

Do you need special hardware?

Yes — your device will need a Human Presence Detection (HPD) sensor, something already found in newer laptops powered by Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm.

If you’re unsure whether your laptop has it, head to Settings > System > Power & battery to check.

When is it coming?

Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed a release date, but the feature has been spotted in recent Windows 11 preview builds. That means it’s likely not too far away.

Why it matters

Privacy is becoming a bigger deal than ever — and it’s great to see Microsoft investing in subtle but powerful features like this. For professionals who often work on the go, a little extra peace of mind could go a long way.

Would you use Onlooker Detection when working in public?
