Most malware is now powered by AI

What if I told you that many of today’s cyber attacks aren’t being carried out by people at all… but by artificial intelligence?

Because that’s exactly what’s happening.

New research shows that around 80% of ransomware attacks are now driven by AI. That’s four out of five incidents. And ransomware is only part of the picture.

AI is now being used to:

  • Generate highly convincing phishing emails

  • Crack passwords at extreme speed

  • Bypass CAPTCHAs with ease

  • Create fake customer service calls using deepfake audio or video

For small and medium sized businesses, this shift changes everything.

Why AI-powered attacks are so dangerous

It comes down to speed and scale.

AI can probe thousands of weaknesses in minutes. A human attacker could only attempt a handful.
And while your business needs to defend every single entry point, a criminal only needs one successful breach.

That imbalance is what makes AI-driven malware such a serious threat.

Traditional defences - such as antivirus software or occasional patching - simply weren’t designed to handle attacks that evolve and adapt this quickly. AI-powered threats can modify themselves faster than a security team can react.

The good news? AI is also helping businesses defend themselves

Modern security tools now use AI to:

  • Monitor for unusual behaviour across your systems

  • Predict and block likely attacks

  • Detect ransomware activity in real time

  • Create traps that expose malicious activity

But none of these solutions work in isolation. Businesses need a layered approach, combining:

  • Regular updates and patching

  • Strong password and MFA policies

  • AI-powered security tools

  • Human oversight and clear processes

Cyber crime driven by AI won’t slow down. But businesses that act now, strengthen their defences, and stay proactive won’t be easy targets.
