Microsoft Copilot has changed significantly since it first started appearing across Microsoft 365.
What began as an AI assistant for drafting emails, summarising documents and helping create content is gradually becoming something much more capable.
Microsoft groups many of its larger Copilot developments into releases known as “waves”.
And with Copilot Wave 3, the direction is becoming clear.
Copilot isn't just being developed to help you complete individual tasks.
It's increasingly being designed to take on work itself.
From AI assistant to AI agents
One of the biggest developments is the growing role of AI agents within Microsoft 365.
Rather than repeatedly prompting Copilot to perform individual tasks, agents can be created for specific jobs and processes.
Think of them as specialised AI assistants that understand what they're responsible for, follow instructions and help carry out repetitive work.
That could mean an agent that helps manage routine administration, works with internal information, supports a particular business process or handles recurring tasks.
For businesses, this has the potential to remove a significant amount of manual work.
But it's also an important change.
The more autonomy you give AI, the more important it becomes to understand what it can access and what it's allowed to do.
Copilot Chat can do more of the work
The Copilot experience itself is also becoming more capable.
Rather than using AI simply to answer a question and then manually taking that answer somewhere else, Microsoft is making it easier to work directly with your Microsoft 365 content through Copilot.
That means conversations with Copilot can increasingly become the place where work actually happens.
Documents can be created or changed. Information can be analysed. Emails and other content can be worked on without constantly moving between different applications.
It's another step towards Copilot becoming a central interface for getting work done across Microsoft 365.
Work IQ gives Copilot more business context
Another important part of Wave 3 is Work IQ.
One of the limitations of any general AI tool is that it doesn't automatically understand how your organisation operates.
Your business has its own people, documents, terminology, relationships and ways of working.
Work IQ is designed to give Copilot greater understanding of that context by drawing on information and relationships within your Microsoft 365 environment.
The aim is simple: make Copilot's responses more relevant to your actual work.
Instead of producing generic answers, Copilot can use appropriate business context to provide more useful assistance.
Of course, that also reinforces why Microsoft 365 permissions and data governance matter.
AI can only be as safely informed as the environment you give it access to.
More AI models are coming into Copilot
Microsoft is also broadening the AI technology available behind Copilot.
Different AI models can have different strengths, so giving Copilot access to a wider range of models potentially allows Microsoft to select better technology for different types of work.
For the average user, much of this will happen behind the scenes.
You shouldn't need to understand which model is doing what.
What you'll notice instead is Copilot becoming capable of handling a broader and increasingly sophisticated range of tasks.
And AI coworkers are on the horizon
The direction becomes even more interesting when you look at what Microsoft is developing next.
The concept of AI coworkers takes agents beyond individual actions and towards longer-running pieces of work.
Instead of saying:
"Help me with this task."
The relationship starts moving towards:
"Here's something I need done."
The AI can then potentially work through multiple stages towards completing it.
That's a significant change in how businesses might eventually use AI.
More capability needs more control
There's a common theme running through all these developments.
Copilot is being given more responsibility.
That's potentially great for productivity, but businesses shouldn't introduce autonomous AI without thinking about how it's governed.
If an AI agent can access company information, interact with systems and perform actions, you need to know:
What information can it access?
What actions is it allowed to take?
Who created and authorised it?
What permissions does it have?
How is its activity monitored?
What happens if it makes the wrong decision?
Microsoft is developing management and governance capabilities alongside these newer AI features, giving organisations greater visibility and control over how agents are deployed and used.
And that's going to become increasingly important.
The businesses that get the most from Copilot won't necessarily be the ones that give AI access to everything as quickly as possible.
They'll be the ones that find useful applications for it while keeping people, permissions, security and governance firmly in the picture.
Copilot Wave 3 is another significant step in that direction.
